When it comes to enhancing the aesthetics, durability and energy efficiency of homes, few elements play as crucial a role as windows. Among the many options available, clad-wood windows stand out for their unique blend of style and durability. Whether you're starting a new construction project or considering window replacements, join us as we cover the bases of clad windows.

What Are Clad Windows?

Clad windows are made of wood and feature an outer layer of protection over the frame and sash. The term cladding simply refers to layering one material over another as an exterior barrier. At Pella, our cladding is made of aluminum and comes standard on all wood windows. It’s a low-maintenance, watershed cladding that we call EnduraClad®.

EnduraClad acts as a shield against the elements, but it’s not the only line of defense for wood windows. The frames and sashes feature Pella's EnduraGuard® wood protection which offers advanced protection against the effects of moisture, decay, stains from mold and mildew – as well as termite damage. The wood parts are treated with our exclusive formula before assembly, ensuring strong protection on every surface. Treated with the EnduraGuard formula and covered with EnduraClad, Pella’s wood windows are well-protected from the elements, resisting rot and corrosion.

Roll-Form vs. Extruded Aluminum Cladding

Aluminum cladding is available on Pella® Reserve™ and Pella Lifestyle Series products. Lifestyle Series products feature roll-form aluminum, meaning sheet metal is bent into a desired cross-sectional profile by passing it through several sets of rolls. Pella Reserve products feature extruded aluminum cladding which involves heating aluminum to a high temperature and forcing it through a die with a specific cross-sectional shape. This process offers even more strength and durability to the wood windows.

Benefits of Aluminum-Clad Windows

Aluminum-clad windows offer several benefits that make them a popular choice among homeowners:

Design Versatility

Compared to fiberglass or vinyl windows which offer a few color choices, wood windows have more features, options and customizability. This design flexibility comes, in part, from the exterior aluminum cladding. It’s available in a variety of finishes, including custom colors. Clad-wood windows provide the warmth and beauty of wood on the interior while offering a sleek and low-maintenance exterior finish. This allows homeowners to customize the look of their windows to match their design preferences and enhance the curb appeal of their homes.

Aluminum-clad windows are also versatile in that they can be used in various applications, including residential and commercial buildings. They are suitable for both new construction and replacement projects and can be customized to meet specific design requirements and performance standards.

Durability

Aluminum is known for its strength and resilience, ensuring the exterior of wood windows resist chalking and fading. The cladding adds an extra layer of protection against moisture, UV rays and other environmental factors, helping to prolong the lifespan of the windows.

Low Maintenance

Cladding helps reduce maintenance and the need to refinish the exterior of your wood window frames, as it helps to maintain the longevity of the wood. The aluminum exterior is resistant to rot, corrosion and insect damage. This enduring finish reduces the need for frequent refinishing, repairs or replacements, ultimately helping you save time and money. Regular window cleaning is usually sufficient to keep the windows looking new.

With enhanced beauty, durability and low-maintenance appeal, aluminum-clad windows not only shield your home from the elements but also elevate its aesthetic charm.
