The Over-the-Rhine neighborhood in downtown Cincinnati is one of the largest urban historic districts in the United States. Over the last decade, the area has undergone significant restoration and is filled with well-preserved 19th century brick buildings converted into shops and townhomes. The owners of one townhome overlooking Saint Francis Seraph Church wanted to enclose their covered patio to create a year-round, usable sunroom with windows from Pella.
Historically Authentic Wood Windows Complement 19th Century Architecture
For this project, the homeowners wanted windows that would complement the aesthetics of the historic architecture of the neighborhood. After all, the converted brick building that plays host to the townhome is over a century old. We recommended our exquisitely designed traditional Pella Reserve windows to best match the space. These aluminum-clad wood windows feature unparalleled historical detailing with through-stile construction and deliberate proportions and profiles. This creates a look that perfectly achieves the historic window replacement the homeowners desired and the neighborhood demanded.
Black Wood Windows Add Airflow and Charm
With no direct sunlight and surrounded by cold brick, the covered patio was uninviting and uncomfortable for most of the year. It featured five large openings where windows once would have been. Adding windows allows the homeowners to spend more time in this space, utilizing it year-round. The homeowners selected a combination of black windows to fill the openings and enclose the space.
Sliding Glass Door Blends Indoor and Outdoor Living
A popular combination, the casement windows sit on top of the awning windows. This allows the casement windows to be opened wide for maximum airflow or for the awning windows to be opened slightly for a fresh breeze. The bold black color of the windows creates a focal point on both the interior and the exterior, complementing the weathered brick that delivers endless charm to the property.
We loved working on this unique project to breathe new life into the historic Over-the-Rhine neighborhood with authentically designed wood windows. The durable and stylish wood windows will help this structure stand the test of time.
