Pella of Southern New England partnered with Turowski2 Architecture to create an exceptional learning environment for the children of New Bedford and the new Irwin M. Jacobs Elementary School was the result. The dense urban setting and water-adjacent lot challenged our team to recommend a commercial window solution that would solve security and durability concerns. As experts in the area, we knew the school’s waterfront location would be subject to strong winds and severe coastal storms. Therefore, our commercial team members recommended fixed, wood windows with laminated impact glazing to ensure the safety of all students and faculty regardless of the weather.
Cladding Helps Sustain Long-Lasting Durability of Wood Windows
Our team installed Pella® Reserve™ — Traditional wood windows throughout Jacobs Elementary School for their enduring strength and beauty. These products use an Early American pre-finished stain which provides classic wood characteristics. Our products were ready to be installed right out of the box, helping to speed up construction timelines by eliminating on-site staining. Since the project needed to be completed before the school year started, the pre-finished stain made the ideal solution.
Also, the exterior finishes include our exclusive EnduraClad® aluminum cladding. This protective finish meets the performance requirements of AAMA 2604. Seacoast EnduraClad helps protect these windows from corrosion and rotting from high salt exposure overtime. Our recommendations are the ideal solution for this coastal environment as they ensure the windows will retain their beauty over time, no matter the conditions.
Laminated Impact Glazing Enhances Safety and Security
Jacobs Elementary School is located on the south end of the prominent Massachusetts peninsula, making it very vulnerable to severe weather threats. To combat these issues, our commercial team installed wood windows, featuring carefully selected. The laminated impact glazing shields the building from unwanted noises, intruders and hurricane debris. To enhance safeguarding measures, the glass uses a polymer layer between the two panes to reduce city sounds, allowing students to focus on learning, instead of what’s happening outside. This extra layer holds the glass together if hit by wreckage, keeping students and faculty safe and comfortable during extreme weather.
Fixed Windows Reduce Drafts and Leaks
The window niches located throughout the school allow children to experience grand views in each classroom. The school district delights in knowing that these additions connect students to their waterfront location and provide phenomenal sunlight during the day. These fixed windows enhance children's safety by eliminating the risk of falls, making them an ideal solution for schools and childcare facilities.
In addition, the builders were thrilled that these fixed windows were expertly installed by our team to avoid any drafts or leaks. Our proper installation methods reduce the number of callbacks, helping builders and architects finish their projects in a timely fashion with limited issues.
Overall, both the school district and Turowski2 Architecture associates admire the seamless installation and window solutions provided by our Pella of Southern New England team. They are overjoyed that students and faculty can experience this amazing new learning environment.
