With over a century of history, this Richmond home required a window upgrade that preserved its historical details while enhancing functionality. The property manager reached out to Pella of Virgina to replace the old, drafty windows with energy-efficient ones that perfectly replicated the existing gothic style.
Our team eagerly took on the challenge and collaborated with Custom Thermal Solutions to coordinate the additional construction needed for the installation. Their team crafted custom rectangular framing on the interior side of each window, while we designed windows to match the property’s aesthetic. We recommended single-hung windows with black gothic grilles from our Pella Reserve — Traditional line to maintain the original detailing and style.
Custom Grille Pattern Enhances Gothic Window Design
Maintaining historical accuracy was a key component in this restoration project. To adhere to the gothic style, our team customized grilles that enhanced the pointed arches and three-lobed pattern on the windows. Additionally, the Integral Light Technology grilles are permanently sealed to both the inside and outside of the glass, casting a shadow similar to individual windowpanes from the 1920s. These specialty grilles create an authentic look and feel of true-divided light.
Spoon Lock Keeps the Historical Integrity of 100-Year-Old Home
To preserve the character of the original gothic arch windows, our team recommended spoon-style locks. Our authentic hardware keeps the window secure, while the sashes lift the window open and closed. These single-hung windows feature a sash latch lock, commonly used in the 1900s because of its simple mechanisms that were built to last. We selected a satin brass finish to demonstrate the craftsmanship and complement the white interior of these windows.
The property manager can rest assured that the replacements will preserve the architectural design of the gothic windows. The property manager was thrilled with the results of this window replacement and that our team could refresh his property while maintaining its historical integrity.
